Västra Frölunda Idrottsförening, VFIF, were founded in 1932, with ice hockey being added to the program in 1943/44, but due to mild winters in Gothenburg, the makeshift bandy players from VFIF had to wait until 1946 before they could play the club's first official hockey game.
Frölunda established themselves as a national hockey power in the late 1950s and won their first championship in 1965. After some difficult years in the late 80s, and the re-building of Frölunda HC, the club stormed back to the top league, Elitserien, and established a youth program which eventually led to championships in 2003 and 2005. Throughout the years, Frölunda have been drawing great attendance in Sweden, regularly gathering crowds of 10,000-plus.
Frölunda pride themselves on developing players through their youth academy and are the European club which has the most players drafted and signed by NHL clubs. Famous academy players include Henrik Lundqvist, Daniel Alfredsson, Per-Johan Axelsson, Loui Eriksson, Alexander Steen, Lars Eller, Mikkel Bödker Viktor Stålberg and most recently Rasmus Dahlin and Samuel Fagemo.
They are the most successful team in CHL history, having lifted the European Trophy five times and reached the Final six times and enter the 2026/27 season as reigning European Club Champions.
