CHL Sports Board
With input from the Arbitrator and upon video review, player Jari Sailio (#12) of Espoo Blues, at 44:26 of their game on Friday, 4 September at Grenoble, made contact with an opponent deemed Boarding – IIHF Rule 119.
From the CHL Sports Board's perspective, it is clear that Jari Sailio‘s action requires supplementary discipline. The opposing player did have an apparent injury on the play. The body check was elevated to a suspension due to: 1) the distance travelled, at a high rate of speed, directly at the opponent with no regard for the puck, 2) elevation through the check to impose excessive force to the opponents head into the glass, and 3) the excessive nature of the body check, causing the opponent to impact the boards in a violent manner.
From the perspective of the CHL Sports Board, Jari Sailio of the Espoo Blues is suspended for 1 CHL game, effective immediately.
Key Points:
1. Excessive force to an opponent into the boards
2. Opponent is defenceless
3. No regard for the puck
4. Not a repeat offender
Jari Sailio will miss the Blues' final group stage game on Sunday, 6 September against HC Litvinov. Since his team has qualified for the CHL playoffs, he will be eligible to play in the first game of the Round of 32.
