In our last transfer update for the summer of 2015, we bring you additions to the rosters of the Braehead Clan and KalPa Kuopio. As well, Canadian centre Brandon Buck will be staying with ERC Ingolstadt long-term.
CHL News
We're closing in on the 13 August deadline for the 48 CHL clubs to name their rosters for the group stage, and teams continue to fine-tune their lineups by adding and subtracting key pieces, and other players sign contract extensions.
Of course, ZSC Lions Zurich made the biggest news of the week on Friday by signing American teenage sensation Auston Matthews to a one-year contract. The contract kicks in on Matthews' 18th birthday on 18 September, so he'll miss the CHL group stage but be eligible for the playoff stage.
ERC Ingolstadt announced a five-year contract extension for Canadian centre Brandon Buck. Last season Buck had 59 points in 51 DEL regular season games, 20 points in 18 playoff games as Ingolstadt reached the finals, and four points in six CHL contests. An interview with Buck on the Ingolstadt team website described the 26-year-old as a “franchise player”.
“I love it here, my family loves it here, and the team is strong,” Buck said, explaining his decision to make such a long-term commitment. “Here in Ingolstadt, everything is done so professionally in every aspect. All of these things are very important for an import player from North America to successfully perform for a team. It's fun to play for the Panthers. I've never had so much fun anywhere else in my professional career.”
One of Engolstadt's Group O opponents, the Braehead Clan, continue to shake up their roster, adding pieces that could make them tough to beat in the upcoming CHL. Their latest additions include Swedish defenceman Marcus Gotz and Canadian right winger Thomas Nesbitt. As a Swede who has played in Germany, Gotz offered his insight into Braehead's Swedish and German opponents – the Vaxjo Lakers and Ingolstadt – in an audio interview on the club's website.
“The Swedish team won the championship last year. I know they're a really good team – they're fast and play their system really well. I think that's what Swedish teams are known for – they play really good systems. The German team I would say are fast and strong.” He added, “I would say both of the teams are really good and I think it will be a really good experience for the team and the organization to just be involved in it and see how they do things – a good opportunity to learn.”
Last week, KalPa Kuopio added a couple of forwards to their roster. On Monday they added 21-year-old Swedish defenceman Christopher Bengtsson.
“Christopher brings versatility to our forward lines, as he can play both wing and centre. Over the past four weeks he has displayed the skill and character that should add depth to our third and fourth lines,” sports director Kimmo Kapanen explained in a club-issued press release.
