Tickets went on sale for the Champions Hockey League Final on Friday and sold out very quickly – that same afternoon, hosts Kärpät announced that it was sold out.
"It’s absolutely fantastic that the Final game was sold out almost instantly,” said general manager Harri Aho. “It shows just how great interest the fans have towards CHL Final. It’s a unique thing for the fans here in Northern Finland to get the CHL title match in Oulu and it’s going to be a great event, when these two great European teams battle for the championship."
Speaking about the visiting team, Aho remembered back to last year's CHL Semi-Final, when the same two teams met and were tied on aggregate after a game in each city. Frölunda defenceman Erik Gustafsson then scored in overtime to send his team to the Final and send the home fans in Oulu away entertained but disappointed.
“Even though the event is young we already have some history with Frölunda. Last year’s Semi-Final series against the Swedes was great and the second game that was played in Oulu was one of the greatest hockey games played in Finland last year.”
CHL CEO Martin Baumann is also obviously pleased with the enthusiasm of the Northern Finnish fans and is looking forward to what should be a great game.
“We are delighted to hear that the CHL Final has sold out so quickly. This shows the importance of this ultimate game where the best of the best, Kärpät Oulu and Frölunda Gothenburg, crown this season’s European club champion. I’m looking forward to a thrilling game at Oulun Energia Areena. But I also feel sorry for all who missed their chance to get a ticket for the highlight of the CHL season.”
This means that the CHL Final has now sold out both seasons. Last year, Luleå's Coop Norrbotten Arena was filled to capacity as 6,300 watched hometown Luleå Hockey defeat Frölunda 4–2. Oulun Engeria Arena has a capacity of 6,614 spectators.
