Farjestad Karlstad's late equalizing goal on home ice means they will probably win Group O, pending their last game against Comarch Cracovia. Sparta Prague won 3-2 in overtime. Read more in Gamecentre.
It was a game between two teams who had already qualified for the next round and just battling for which would finish first and which would finish second in Group O. As was the case in their first meeting in Prague, it was a game between two patient, disciplined teams and was won by one goal by the visitors. However, the one point by Farjestad means that they most likely have the group topped, unless they give away points in their last game against Cracovia.
After a relatively uneventful first period, in which each team registered five shots on goal, the action picked up early in the second with some end-to-end rushes. Sparta's Lukas Cingel hit the post on a shorthanded 2-on-1 at one end, and minutes later Farjestad opened the scoring on a miscue behind the Sparta net – goaltender Tomas Popperle gave the puck away to John Persson. He fed Marcus Nilsson in front, who shot it into the empty net.
After that, Sparta really started pressing. Then, with four minutes remaining in the second period and a delayed penalty coming to Farjestad, they tied it as from behind the net Lukas Pech fed Petr Vrana out front, who made no mistake. It was technically a shorthanded goal, as the teams had been skating 4-on-4 but the Farjestad penalty had just ended.
Sparta took the lead with 12:20 left in regulation time on Juraj Cernoch's one-time blast on the power play. This created an interesting situation, as the reverse score between the two teams from their first game in Prague was 2-1, meaning a complicated set of tie-breakers would have been in order had the score held up, depending on the outcome of the group's last game.
With nine minutes to go, Cingel had his second near-miss of the game as the puck rolled along the goal line, and then Magnus Nygard hit the post the other way. On a late power play Farjestad pressed for the equalizer. They didn't get it, but they kept up the furious attack into the last minute and finally Tim Stapleton banged the puck home in a scramble with 42 seconds left.
With their chance to take three points gone, Sparta regrouped and attacked hard in overtime, getting the winning goal on a 2-on-1 with Pech converting a nice pass from Miroslav Forman to get two points at least.
"We appreciate this win but we wanted to win in 60 minutes, because we wanted to win this group,” said Sparta coach Jir Kalous, pointing out the complicated scenarios that were in play as the game neared its end. “Now we have to wait to see what happens in the last game (between Farjestad and Cracovia). We started slow but we started getting better, creating chances. Unfortunately, we lost the lead in the 60th minute but we had to regroup and try to win in overtime, and we did."
Farjestad coach Leif Carlsson figured, "We didn't capitalize on our good scoring chances. We created a whole lot of chances, especially during the first 12 or 13 minutes of the game, where we maybe should've capitalized a couple of times. But today we didn't, and it's a part of the game which we have to work with. Now we face Cracovia at home next weekend and, even though I think we showed great moral to cut deficit in the end, there are a couple of things we need to do better next game. Especially, capitalizing on the scoring chances."
