DAVOS – They'd made a habit of falling behind in the first legs of their CHL playoff series this season, but Frolunda Gothenburg have done themselves a favour in the Semi-Finals, winning 5–0 in Davos on Tuesday night to give themselves a comfortable cushion in their home game next week.
"We played really good today," said Frolunda coach Roger Ronnberg. "I think we were calm. The last five minutes in the second there wasn't good, but otherwise it was a really good game."
A large and enthusiastic crowd came to Vaillant Arena and hoped to see their team continue their impressive CHL run. They had some chances on an early power play but failed to capitalize, and then Frolunda opened the scoring on their first power play at 5:29, when Spencer Abbott went upstairs with a one-timer.
The Indians were dominant for a long stretch after that, although Leonardo Genoni did a good job of keeping them from scoring the rest of the period. Davos nearly tied it just past the 15-minute mark, but amidst a scramble in front of the Frolunda net, the puck was kept out by defenceman Tom Nilsson. Frolunda continued to dominate the first half of the second period and made it 2–0 when Artturi Lehkonen's long wrister beat Genoni far side.
Davos came back with a push late in the second and almost got on the board with 45 seconds left when Devon Setoguchi set up Beat Forster for a one-timer but Lars Johansson slid across to make an unbelievable glove save right on the goal line, by far the most impressive of his 20 saves in the game. It left the Davos team and all of its fans stunned, and sent them to the second intermission feeling frustrated.
Ryan Lasch's goal off a turnover in the first minute of the third period was a dagger to the heart of Davos, and then two goals by youngster Jacob Larsson – one a beautiful move to the outside and the other a slapper off a faceoff – put Frolunda well on their way to a return trip to the Champions Hockey League Final.
