The Champions Hockey League's Round of 16 has its first members, as Litvinov needed overtime to edge Vienna, while Karpat, Skelleftea and TPS came through in regulation time.
TPS Turku 4–1 JYP Jyvaskyla
GAME HIGHLIGHTS | TPS WIN 6–3 ON AGGREGATE
Finnish Liiga rivals TPS and JYP were deadlocked heading into this one, and the difference was provided by Dave Spina, who scored three goals in a three-goal TPS victory to put them through to the next round. It was JYP captain Tuomas Pihlman who scored the lone goal in the first period before Spina came back with three in a row – two in the second and one in the third. Teemu Lassila was also a story in goal, stopping 27 of 28.
Tappara Tampere 2–1 Vitkovice Ostrava
GAME HIGHLIGHTS | TAPPARA WIN 4–1 ON AGGREGATE
After dropping the first game at home by two goals, Vitkovice were in a hole to start in Tampere and fell into a bigger hole when captain Jukka Peltola scored for Tappara with 8 seconds left in the first period. From then on they pressed hard, but could only score once on Mika Noronen, who was brilliant in 120 minutes of hockey in this round.
Skelleftea AIK 3–0 HC Kosice
GAME HIGHLIGHTS | SKELLEFTEA WIN 6–4 ON AGGREGATE
Kosice surprisingly entered the game with a one-goal aggregate lead, and then proceeded to protect that lead for more than half of today's game, depsite constant bombardment from Skelleftea, thanks to the brilliant goaltending of Marcel Melichercik. They couldn't hold out forever, though, and Janne Pesonen opened the scoring in the 37th minute. In the third, Terry Broadhurst scored the series winner on the power play with a brilliant move in front of the net, and a late empty-netter put Skelleftea through.
“I’m really happy that we’re through to the next round. We played against a really good team and only let them get 9 shots against us – I think that shows we were strong in that department tonight, assessed Skelleftea coach Hans Wallsson. About the goaltending, he said, “Their goalie stood on his head tonight. I mean, just look at the statistics – 45 shots against him. I think he did a fine job tonight, to say the least. But our goalie (Markus Svensson) played really well too, they were very dangerous in their transitions and he managed to shut them out.”
Karpat Oulu 3–0 Dusseldorfer EG
GAME HIGHLIGHTS | KARPAT WIN 5–0 ON AGGREGATE
Karpat exploded out of the gate on home ice, scoring twice in the first 5:02, then getting a third goal on a five-minute power play late in the opening period to give them a five-goal aggregate lead. With the stingy defence, that was more than enough, as Sami Aittokallio stopped all 22 shots he faced to record his fifth shutout in six CHL games. With their spot in the next round easily in hand, Karpat didn't press much over the last 40 minutes, but rather protected the lead they had.
“I don’t think we were ready for this game in the first 10 minutes,” admitted Dusseldorf coach Christof Kreutzer. “We made little mistakes and Oulu is a kind of team that if you make a mistake against them, it’s 1–0. I think we got better in the game in the last 40 minutes. We worked hard for this, we played better defence. Karpat have a great goalie. Not just today but every game. I wish them good luck next round and I think they have a good chance to win the championship this year.”
“It feels great,” Karpat coach Lauri Marjamaki happily replied when asked how it feels to advance to the Round of 16. “We have taken this tournament seriously and we prepared ourselves really well for this game. We started with a good drive and got a 3–0 lead and eventually those goals made the difference. We are happy – 6 games and 1 goal against. We have gotten good results against Europe.”
HC Litvinov 2–2 Vienna Capitals
GAME HIGHLIGHTS | LITVINOV WIN 5–4 (OT) ON AGGREGATE
Litvinov entered the game with a one-goal aggregate lead and they needed it, as Derek Whitmore scored a beautiful shorthanded goal on a solo effort to tie it for Vienna with 9:14 remaining in regulation time. However, Frantisek Lukes scored in overtime to send Litvinov into the Round of 16. The game was scoreless through 40 minutes – defensive on both sides from the start but Vienna started to open things up as time went on. The two teams then traded power-play goals early in the third before Whitmore's marker.
