In a match in which the Red Bulls only needed a point to qualify, and knock-out Znojmo in the process, the hosts took the lead with 1:27 remaining on the opening period – Jonathan Matsumoto with the goal. That was however some minutes after a confrontation at 13:09 which saw Fribourg's Michael Loichat put in the box for roughing, along with Munich's Derek Joslin. Further to that, Red Bulls' netminder David Leggio was ejected on a five plus game call for the same offence.
Frank Mauer added a second for the hosts a few moments past the halfway mark in the middle period, and Michael Wolf's shorthanded effort extended the lead to 3-1. Fribourg pulled a goal back to get themselves on the board with 47:32 played thanks to Marc-Antoine Pouliot, but they were unable to muster anything else any Munich recorded a 3-1 win to book their place in the next round.
"It was a complete team win in a must-win game for us if we wanted to try and win out group," said Red Bulls coach Don Jackson after the game. :We want to win on Friday although we don't need to do anything more, but we're in good shape for that game."
"We didn't play well today. They were a much better team and deserved to win. They put us under a lot of pressure, and we didn't know how to react," admitted Fribourg coach Gerd Zenhausern. "Credit to Munich, but we need to be better in the opening of games going forward."
