Salzburg head to Bern with confidence, despite deficit
After winning 4-1 in Salzburg in the first game, SC Bern are in excellent shape heading into the home half of this Round of 32 match-up with a three-goal lead. Salzburg were left shaking their heads following the game after out-shooting Bern 32-20, but not beating Leonardo Genoni until the game's final minute. However, that goal by Bill Thomas does make their outlook a little less bleak heading to the Swiss capital.
"We had more chances but fewer goals," shrugged Salzburg's Thomas Raffl. "We know we can be effective too. We didn't lose our self-confidence. We made mistakes in the offense zone and in the defense zone but we showed in phases some very good play for an EBEL team versus a top European team."
"We had enough good scoring chances to win the game. At the moment we're a bit unlucky going forward, a few players maybe didn't bring their A-game today either," conceded Red Bulls' coach Greg Poss in his post-game interview. "However, we can say with confidence that we can score four goals against Bern and capitalize on those scoring chances next week. They used their chances very effectively tonight and won the game."
"Our goalie played a great game – he gave us the chance to win," said Bern coach Kari Jalonen after the game. "We played a solid road game, good defensively, and used our opportunities at the other end."
