Vitkovice Ostrava won a thrilling shootout game in Ingolstadt and Adler Mannheim beat Sparta Prague on home ice in overtime. Meanwhile, Red Bull Salzburg and Swiss clubs Geneve-Servette and Fribourg-Gotteron strengthened their positions atop their groups with shutout victories on the road.
Kloten Flyers 0–2 Red Bull Salzburg
A short time after losing their lead atop Group I, Red Bull Salzburg went into Kloten and won 2–0 to re-claim their lead with a 2–0 win. They now need just a point from their last game at home against Kloten to clinch first place. Defenceman Matthias Trattnig assisted on both goals, one of which was an empty-netter. Luca Gracnar made 31 saves for the shutout, while Jonas Muller stopped 32 of 33 for the Flyers.
ERC Ingolstadt 4–5 Vitkovice Ostrava (SO)
In a game between two teams with no chance of advancing, ERC Ingolstadt and Vitkovice Ostrava played an exciting, offensive game that went to a shootout, where visiting Vitkovice prevailed. Rudolf Huna scored a late goal to give Vitkovice the lead, but Jared Ross tied it with just one second on the clock to earn Ingolstadt a point.
"We arrived with a completely changed team," explained Vitkovice coach Peter Oremus. "We lost nine players due to injuries, so we came here with very young players. The young players played really well. Basically we are very satisfied with the results but it's a shame that it's not a three-point win just because we got score on in the last second. We are also very satisfied with the goals on the power play because sometimes it's been a problem for us. Today we were effective on the power play."
"It was a tough game. I thought that we played very well," said Ingolstadt coach Larry Hurras. "We dominated five-on-five but the difference were the special teams and for sure the power play. I think Peter Oremus's team did a good job. I think coming back from 2–0 down and going to a shootout is a positive. Another positive thing was the young guys coming in today – Stephan Kronthaler, Eddy Leitans, Martin Davidek. They came in and made a big impact on the game. We need to have more from some of our guys."
Adler Mannheim 3–2 Sparta Prague (OT)
With their lead atop Group G seemlingly slipping away, Sparta Prague got a late goal from Juraj Mikus with just 43 seconds left in the third period to earn a point. They couldn't manage a second, however, as veteran Jochen Hecht scored a power-play goal in overtime to give Mannheim the win. Sparta maintains a two-point lead over KalPa Kuopio and three-point lead over the Vaxjo Lakers – those two teams face each other on Wednesday.
"We came out hard and forced our game onto them," said the overtime hero Hecht. "We didn't let them skate with the puck and forced turnovers, and our power play was clicking today, it got two goals for us."
"We got the goal at the end to get the point, so that was good, and it's an important point for the standings," said Sparta defenceman Robert Sabolic, balancing evaluating the point gained but also what got away. "But we had a chance for more and we wanted to win so it's disappointing."
Villach SV 0–5 Geneve-Servette
Villach SV could have pulled into a tie with Geneve-Servette with a regulation victory, but instead it was visiting Geneve who were utterly dominant, firing 54 shots on goal and running roughshod over their Austrian hosts and winning 5–0. Kevin Romy scored twice and Matt D'Agostini contributed three assists, while Christophe Bays recorded the 28-save shutout. Geneve now temporarily moves three points up on Frolunda, who face Briancon on Wednesday.
Eisbaren Berlin 0–2 Fribourg-Gotteron
Berlin Eisbaren out-shot Fribourg-Gotteron 26–15, but Fribourg got a big goaltending performance from Melvin Nyffeler, who stopped everything and his team scored twice in front of him. Tristin Vauclair assisted on both goals as Fribourg increase their lead atop Group D, and could clinch it depending on the outcome of Djurgarden–Zlin.
