Swiss side Fribourg-Gottéron will clash with Finnish newcomers Jukurit Mikkeli in the Round of 16 in this season of the Champions Hockey League. Both teams are aiming to move on to the Quarter-Finals, but only one will at the end of this two-game matchup.
- Jukurit have scored 16 goals in five games, Fribourg 12 in six
- Fribourg have some of the best defensive stats in the CHL
- Connor Hughes of Fribourg - nearly 99% Save Percentage
Fribourg-Gottéron made headlines last season when they became the first team in CHL history to finish the Group Stage unbeaten and with a full 18 points.
Despite that, they exited the competition somewhat unexpectedly in the very next round, losing to Red Bull Munich both home and away in the Round of 16.
This season, the Swiss club have picked up where they've left off in the Group Stage, qualifying from top spot in Group E. They picked up five wins and one loss for a total of 14 points in six games.
Limited scoring, controlled play and superb goaltending would be the best way to characterise their performances so far this season - Fribourg only scored 12 goals (just two per game!) but only let five hit the back of the net as well.
Both of their goaltenders, Connor Hughes and Reto Berra, have split goaltending duties so far this season and both have some of the best Save Percentages in the CHL - Hughes sitting at nearly 99% and Berra at over 96%!
Going forward, the Swiss team have been conservative, but their two goals/game average still resulted in them winning five games so they've definitely backed that lack of scoring up with solid defending and controlled play - will that be enough against Jukurit?
Jukurit Mikkeli finished second behind Swedish club Luleå Hockey in Group A, beating the Aalborg Pirates and Sparta Prague to the second Playoffs qualification spot of their group.
The Finns have had some unexpected events along the way, mainly a forfeit victory against Sparta, but have been able to perform on a high level and qualified for the knockout phase in their very first season in the pan-European competition.
Their stats are somewhat affected by missing a game, but in general, they have scored over three goals in each game they have played and created countless chances.
They have also been very strong on special unit play - their powerplay % (over 27%) is one of the highest in the CHL and their penalty kill is also solid.
The only hole in their stats is 15 goals against, but their high-scoring, high-conceding style of play seems to have worked well for Jukurit, winning them the required number of points to move on to the next round.
Frans Tuohimaa has spent the most time in net for the Liiga side and ended the Group Stage with a save percentage of over 90%, making over a 100 saves and recording a shutout against Aalborg.
Pekka Jormakka and Michal Kovařčík lead the team points-wise, with Jormakka recording 4G,1A and Kovařčík 1G,4A.
Patrik Puistola's five assists also push him high up the Jukurit list.
Their high productivity could work well against Fribourg but we'll just have to wait and see if they will be able to crack the Swiss wall in front of their opponent's net.
