The Quarter-Finals have been friendly to the team from Gothenburg, Sweden. As four-time Champions Hockey League Champions and five-time Finalists, Frölunda Gothenburg have a wealth of experience to back up their bid for another run at the Final. Debutantes Leksands IF, however, don’t enjoy this luxury as they’re seeing all of this for the first time. But while these two teams have yet to meet in the CHL, they’re quite familiar with each other from their time in the SHL. According to Leksand Head Coach, Björn Hellkvist, "normally when we play against Frölunda both teams really force each other to bring their best performance into the game."
Both Leksand and Frölunda hail from Sweden meaning travel time won’t be much of an issue for either club. Separated by just 456 kilometres, these two teams will cross the shortest distance to play their home-and-away series, giving each ample time to focus on other aspects of their game to ensure a date in the Semi-Finals. For Hellkvist, this means employing, "good goalkeeping, good special teams, and a solid defense."
Frölunda start things off on the road as Leksand will try for a repeat performance of their last CHL contest at Tegera Arena. If the hosts' 8-1 win over KAC Klagenfurt is any indication of their capabilities on home ice, then this First Game is sure to be a treat. Throughout the competition, Leksand have seen most of their success come on home ice, where they’ve only lost once – a 5-2 defeat from Fribourg-Gotteron. Frölunda, however, have shown that they can win anywhere but have done their best work in front of their home crowd, as well. It is important to note, though, that Frölunda’s only loss of this campaign came when they were visiting ZSC Lions Zurich.
Having reached the 100-point milestone in the First Game against Adler Mannheim, American forward Ryan Lasch continued to cement his name in CHL history. With 14 points through eight contests, Lasch will undoubtedly be a key contributor moving forward. Meanwhile, Leksand's Justin Kloos, has done everything his club has asked of him and then some. The 28-year-old Minnesotan leads the team with 10 points, including 4 helpers in their win over Klagenfurt, and will be in the spotlight when Leksand face the defending champions.
