The Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals ended this week as the 2021/22 line-up was once again cut in half.
Tappara Tampere, Red Bull Munich, Rögle Ängelholm and Frölunda Gothenburg move on to the Semi-Finals, whilst Sparta Prague, the Rouen Dragons, Lukko Rauma and Leksands IF dropped out of the race for the European Trophy.
Regardless of which category each team falls into, there were some amazing individual performances over the two legs that we need to highlight – here’s our Team of the Quarter-Finals!
Goaltender – Matija Pintarič
We will focus more on goaltender performances in an article later this week, but without giving away too much, it’s obvious who made top spot – Matija Pintarič.
The Slovenian netminder in Rouen’s services didn’t miss a single game of the 2021/22 season and played a crucial role in Rouen’s fairy tale run to the Quarter-Finals.
Pintarič was already a stand-out performer in the Group Stage, which landed him a spot on our Team of the Group Stage, and he continued with excellent performances in the following two Playoff rounds.
In the Quarter-Finals First Game against Tappara, the 32-year-old shot stopper made 40 saves and was instrumental for Rouen who pulled off a surprise 3-3 draw.
He was also in amazing form in the Return Game the following week, saving 48 shots to end his final CHL game of 2021/22 with a 96% Save Percentage, but ultimately even his outstanding performances weren’t enough to propel Rouen into the Semi-Finals
Defence – Jens Olsson
Frölunda’s Jens Olsson had an outstanding game in his side’s 5-2 bashing of Leksand in the Quarter-Finals First Game, something that went somewhat unnoticed until now.
The towering defenceman picked up a goal, only his second of the season, and an assist in the game, adding to his already solid personal statistics.
Olsson is now on 8 points (2G, 6A) and has a +/- of +5 heading into the Semi-Finals!
Talk about a secret weapon!
Defence – Lucas Ekeståhl Jonsson
Rögle’s Lucas Ekeståhl Jonsson had a killer of a game against Sparta in the First Game. The 25-year-old defenceman scored his second goal of the season and assisted two in his team’s 5-2 win over the Czechs.
Jonsson, a first line player, heads into the Semi-Finals as his team’s joint Top Points Scorer with 12 points (2G, 10A) and in very fine form!
Just take a look at this strike!
Forward – Kyle Platzer
Tappara’s Kyle Platzer was one of Tappara’s most important players in the Quarter-Finals.
The 26-year-old Canadian-born forward scored the first goal in the First Game against Rouen and went on to pick up an assist as well.
In the Return Game in France, Platzer scored in the second period to jump start his team who ultimately went on to put three more in Rouen’s net and comfortably move on to the Semi-Finals.
He enters the penultimate round of the CHL Playoffs on 8 points (4G, 4A).
Forward - Patrik Carlsson
Another Frölunda player on our list, Patrik Carlsson was a vital player in the First Game of his side’s Quarter-Finals clash with Leksand.
34-year-old Carlsson is a CHL veteran who is featuring in his sixth CHL season and knows how to step up his game when the going gets tough.
He scored the first goal for Frölunda before adding a second in the third period to extend his side’s lead in the series – a lead that would later come in hand, as a resilient Leksand pushed to the final minutes trying to turn around the aggregate score.
Carlsson heads into the Semi-Finals with 11 points (7G, 4A), which is a personal best for him!
Forward – Frederik Tiffels
26-year-old forward Frederik Tiffels has taken the CHL by storm. We already highlighted Munich’s secret weapon in our Team of the Group Stage earlier this year and he has kept on adding points!
In his first CHL season, the Munich player has scored an outstanding 14 points already (8G, 6A), which is over a point per game, and is first on the Top Goal Scorer chart and second on the Top Points Scorer chart – what a debut!
Two of those points came in the form of two goals in the Quarter-Finals.
Tiffels scored Munich’s first goal in the First Game and scored the equaliser in the Return Game, a goal that ultimately pushed the game into overtime where Munich sealed their spot in the Semi-Finals.
With numbers and performances like these, it’s hard to deny a player like Tiffels a spot on our Team of the Quarter-Finals!
