We've completed six seasons since top-flight European hockey returned in 2014. Over those Champions Hockey League campaigns some players have stood out on more than one occasion, and over the next few weeks we’re going to be taking a look at those that are on top of Europe.
A month ago we looked at which players had scored the most goals, but this week we’re looking at which teams have averaged the most per game during their time in the Champions Hockey League!
It’s probably no surprise that the four-time Champions lead this category. Frölunda Indians have averaged almost four goals per game in their 73 played over six seasons – an incredible 3.97 to lead the way thanks to scoring 290 so far!
2015 Champions Luleå Hockey lead the chase in second having managed to net 3.56 goals a game – the Swedes have scored 139 goals in just 39 games in the CHL. Up in third are a team from outside of the Nordics – HC Pilsen! Helped in no small part by Milan Gulaš, the Czech side have averaged a thoroughly entertaining 3.46 goals a game with 90 in just 26 games over three participations.
It’s back to Sweden for the rest of the top five however with Brynäs Gävle up next on an average of 3.40 thanks to 34 goals in their only 10 CHL games to date; while Malmö Redhawks scored 60 in 18 to give them an overall record of 3.33 per game.
Sixth and seventh places belong to Switzerland: Genève-Servette, who will be back in the CHL next season after several years away, averaged 3.25 goals a game in their two previous seasons, while the ZSC Lions have managed 3.23 over their 40 in the competition. 2018 Finalists Växjö come next - the Lakers have played 43 CHL games and scored 137 goals, giving them an average of 3.19. The top ten is completed by two teams sharing ninth place: Tappara and Kometa Brno. The team from Tampere have clocked up an average of 3.15 goals in their 46 games by lighting the lamp 145 times, while Kometa have the same record over 20 games with 63 goals scored.
Honourable mentions
Skellefteå AIK are the third-highest scorers in CHL history, but 142 in 46 games means they just fell short with an average of 3.09 per game. Storhamar Hamar boast the highest average from the Challenger Leagues with 2.81 per game from 26 played.
The lowest record in CHL history belongs to Kloten Flyers, who only managed 0.83 goals on average in six games in the 2014/15 season.
