The Cardiff Devils entered Game Day 5 in top spot of Group H in the 2019/2020 Champions Hockey League season, and with a tough away trip to take on the Frölunda Indians, the teams new captain Joey Martin made his first appearance in the competition this season having missed the first four games through injury.
Things didn't go the Devils way on Tuesday night as they suffered a huge 9-2 loss, putting them into third place in the Group heading into the final game.
It was a good first game for the new captain however, as he marked his first game of the CHL season with his seventh ever goal in the competition.
"It's nice to score but it doesn't matter if we lose"Joey Martin following Cardiff's loss to Frölunda
"We have to get a higher standard and I can guarantee we will next week."
Martin has been a huge part of the Devils success since he joined the team in 2014, helping the Devils to silverware but also suffering losses on the way.
"Obviously a disappointing result for us, Frölunda is a great team but a lot of their goals were caused by our mistakes.
"We have to get better and we have a week to do so."
The Devils won't have much rest ahead of their home fixture against Frölunda with two games in domestic action ahead of Tuesday's clash, and the team know what they need to do to have more of a chance on Game Day 6.
"We need to be more disciplined. We got a lot of penalties against us and we won't be able to win if we continue with that.
"We need to get pucks off of our zone and be more disciplined, and we have to work on our penalty killing and be smarter with the puck."
Cardiff sit in third place of Group H, currently out of playoff contention, but with just a point seperating them from second place Mountfield HK, and two points back on Frölunda they're not out of the race yet.
"We haven't given up.
"It will be an exciting game and a big game for us. So if we win we rebound and we're going to be ready."
