- Ambrì-Piotta recorded their first CHL victory in GD3
- Red Bull Munich dropped shootout in Slovakia
- Munich lost in GD3 last season, only to win their remaining Group Stage games
Group G is getting just that bit interesting. Both teams which won their opening two games, ended up losing on Thursday, which has the potential to throw qualification wide open. With that in mind, Gameday 4 sees Red Bull Munich head to the Leventina Valley to face HC Ambrì-Piotta, with the home side desperate to reverse the 3-0 score when these two teams faced off in Germany.
The hosts were in buoyant spirits on Friday night. In their CHL home debut, they finally got their campaign on the road. Two disappointing losses in Munich and Karlstad evaporated from memory, as the famous home crowd roared the Biancoblu to victory. Färjestad were the visitors on Friday, and struggled to get anything going, as Ambrì-Piotta, backstopped in net by Dominík Hrachovina, put on a solid show to frustrate the Swedish shooters. At the other end, Mario Hofer and Matt D’Agostini recorded just Ambrì-Piotta’s second and third goals respectively in their debut CHL campaign. The Swiss side need to get their offensive guns firing consistently if they stand any chance of progressing.
Red Bull Munich come into this game having tasted defeat for the first time in this year’s CHL campaign. After recorded two straight shutouts in their first two games, HC05 Banská Bystrica needed just 38 seconds to beat Kevin Reich in Slovakia. The teams traded goals in the first period, before a netminding clinic by Banská Bystrica’s Tyler Beskorowany kept Munich out. Philip Gogulla and Frank Mauer both got their first goals for Red bull Munich in 2019/20. Eventually the game went to a shootout, but Banská would prevail. This was a vital point for Munich in the context of keeping them top of Group G, but last season’s beaten CHL Finalists will head to Switzerland desperate to get back to winning ways.
