- The Cardiff Devils host the Graz99ers in Group H action
- Cardiff sit top of the group after their 3-2 win over Mountfield HK
- Graz99ers upset the reigning champions Frölunda Indians in a shootout
The final action of Game Day two of the 2019/20 Champions Hockey League season gets underway in Wales as the Cardiff Devils, fresh off their regulation win over Mountfield HK, welcome Austrian side Graz99ers who sit second in Group H following their 6-5 shootout win over the Frölunda Indians on Friday night.
The Devils special teams impressed in their opening game, grabbing two powerplay goals in 53 seconds in their opening game win, with Blair Riley and Mike McNamee grabbing the goals, and a third goal coming in the third period and a third point of the night for Charles Linglet put the game out of reach, giving Cardiff the dream start they wanted as their quest to be just the second EIHL side to make it through the Group Stage. After his heroics for Team GB in the recent World Championships, netminder Ben Bowns continued to impress with 33 saves on the evening, guiding his club to what could be a crucial three points.
Graz99ers stay on the road for their second game of their debut CHL season, coming in after upsetting the reigning champions Frölunda on their own ice on Friday night. It could have gotten ugly for the Austrian side after they fell 2-0 down just 62 seconds into the game, but they showed great resiliency to respond in the first period with goals coming from Dwight King and Sebastian Collberg to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes. Both sides traded chances through the remaining 40 minutes of play, securing a point for each side as the game headed to overtime. With nothing further in the extra session, it took an eight round shootout for Graz to emerge victorious, kicking off their CHL journey with a bang, which they’ll look to continue as they head to the Welsh capital on Sunday.
