- EHC Biel-Bienne need one point to secure Playoff place
- Swiss side won 6-3 in Klagenfurt, thanks to Peter Schneider’s four goals
- KAC Klagenfurt need a regulation win and other results to go their way
In what was one of the most thrilling games of 2019/20 so far, EHC Biel-Bienne and KAC Klagenfurt put on an offensive show, combining for nine goals, with the Swiss side winning 6-3 on the back of Austrian forward Peter Schneider’s incredible four goal night. Group A qualification is still wide open heading into Game Day 6, and despite having 12 points, Biel-Bienne’s place in the Round of 16 is still not mathematically confirmed. They need a single point to ensure their Playoff place in their debut season. KAC need a regulation win to have any chance of progressing
Until last Wednesday’s game, Biel-Bienne’s CHL campaign had been built on the back of a solid defence and an anaemic offence. In one game, they matched their entire goal tally from the four previous games. They laboured to a 2-1 home win against winless Frisk Asker and were also shutout in Tampere against Tappara. However, the goaltending has also been superb. Jonas Hiller has only allowed one goal in two games, and may get the start in Group A’s final game. Alongside the aforementioned Schneider, keep an eye out for Toni Rajala to build upon his three-point tally so far.
One word to describe KAC Klagenfurt’s return to the CHL – inconsistent. They began their campaign with two home wins, including a stunning 3-2 win over Tappara. However, in the away leg in Finland, Tappara put KAC to the sword and won 8-3. This result may prove costly in the race for Playoff spots. A regulation win leaves KAC level on points with EHC Biel-Bienne. If Tappara also win in regulation against Frisk Asker, KAC Klagenfurt will be the team to miss out, unless they win against Biel-Bienne by more than five goals. On Game Day 5, Biel-Bienne managed to keep Matthew Neal, KAC’s top scorer, off the scoresheet. Neal has had a fantastic campaign so far, with five goals and three assists through eight games. Nicholas Petersen has been his set-up man, with seven assists also in five games.
