- Frölunda and Luleå both looking to make the Finals again
- Frölunda narrowly advanced past Biel-Bienne to make it to the Semi-Finals
- Luleå looking to add to their title they won back in 2015
Only two teams can advance to the grand Final which is guaranteed to have at least one former Champions Hockey League winner involved, as the reigning champions the Frölunda Indians take on the inaugural season champions Luleå Hockey.
Frölunda start the Semi-Finals on home ice, but they’ll be hoping to use that to their advantage more than they’ve been able to over the course of the season. They lost their first two home games in the Group Stage and lost their first game of the Quarter-Finals against EHC Biel-Bienne at home as well. Regardless of form at home, Frölunda are still one of the most dominant teams in European hockey, and the team led by the CHL’s All-Time top scorer Ryan Lasch, as well as captain Joel Lundqvist are looking to make their fifth Final in six seasons, with their eyes on securing their fourth title.
For Luleå, it’s been a few years since they were crowned CHL Champions, but they won’t be intimidated coming into the Semi-Finals against the reigning champions. After finishing top of a difficult Group B, they’ve had a solid run to the Semi-Finals, with their overtime loss against Augsburger Panther in their opening game still their only loss in the competition.
They took a 3-0 lead into the second leg against SC Bern in the Round of 16, they secured their place with a 4-2 win in the second leg, and after a close first game in the Quarter-Finals against Lausanne HC, they put up a 5-2 victory at home to advance to this point. Arttu Ilomäki leads the team in points at this point with 13-points, earning himself a nomination for this seasons MVP award, and again he’ll be looking to add to his point totals to lead Luleå to a good start on the road ahead of the return leg next week.
