- Both teams only let a single goal in during their opening games of the season
- Tappara scored six, Lugano five on Game Day 1
- Lugano have the home ice advantage
Rounding out Game Day 2 is one of the biggest games of the opening weekend, as two high-scoring hockey giants, HC Lugano and Tappara Tampere, clash after dream starts to the new Champions Hockey League season.
Both teams scored high during their season openers – Lugano put five past Skellefteå AIK in front of a healthy crowd and Tappara wreaked havoc in Berlin, scoring five goals in under seven minutes and adding a sixth in the final period.
Whilst Tappara recorded 40 shots on goal, more than double the amount Eisbären Berlin managed throughout the game, and were in control of the contest from start to finish, Lugano’s first appearance in the CHL this season panned out differently.
The Finns were second best for most of the night, going down by a goal in the first period. But a quick equaliser from Mirco Muller put them back in the game and two goals in the second period and another two in the final period made for a substantial 5-1 win over a tough opponent.
Despite recording 25% fewer shots on goal, giving Skellefteå four powerplays to turn the game around and losing more faceoffs than the Swedes, they pulled off this spectacular win.
Positives from the night include a 100% penalty kill efficiency which will come in handy on Sunday as Tappara scored two on the man advantage, and a great performance from goaltender Niklas Schlegel who posted a 0.969 save percentage, letting only a single shot into his net.
There’s a lot to look forward to in this one!
