- Frölunda are currently averaging 4.44 goals per game
- Ryan Lasch leads in Points and Assists
- It's a must win for Leksand who are down three on aggregate
The Quarter-Finals battle between familiar foes and Swedish heavyweights Frölunda Gothenburg and Leksands IF continue, this time at the Frölundaborgs Isstadion where the Gothenburg-side will host their blue and white donned rivals.
With a 5-2 win on the road during their first game, Frölunda head into the matchup with a crucial three point lead on aggregate. They're currently the top ranked team when it comes to lighting up the lamp, averaging 4.44 goals per game, and their powerplay conversion of 33.33 percent, sets them as a top 5 ranked team for special teams. In short, they're offensively deadly, and largely in thanks to American forward, and league legend, Ryan Lasch who leads the league with 14 points overall.
Good netminders are worth their weight in gold and Frölunda's Matthew Tomkins has been the go to man between the pipes. He's sitting on a healthy 92.45% save average, while Leksand's Axel Brage is a step behind with 86.49%.
For Leksand, the Return Game represents a second chance and now it's do or die. Despite two rock-solid periods of hockey, including an early lead in the first period, courtesy of Canadian forward Max Veronneau, a quick succession of goals in the third sent the hosts to their locker rooms with a disappointing loss. That loss came despite outshooting the visitors 36-25.
Leksand will be looking to contain the offensive drive of Frölunda, which will be a challenge given that no single line was dominant in terms of points. In fact, during their last game, it was Frölunda's third and fourth lines that managed the bulk of the damage on the scoreboard.
Leksand will be looking toward their star forwards to create some offensive magic, in particular American forward Justin Kloos and Finnish forward Mikael Ruohomaa. They're supported by the likes of blueliner Matt Caito who has been an outstanding contributor. The American defenceman has netted eight points in nine games.
The domestic season has been challenging for Leksand, who have lost their last four SHL games, and currently rank seventh in the league. In comparison, Frölunda who are the second ranked team, haven't fared superbly either, picking up just one win (4-2 against Leksand only four days ago) in their last four games.
With both clubs well versed in each other's playing style, there's more familiarity than unknowns here, and with Leksand taken down twice, initially in their first leg CHL Quarter-Final, and a second time two days later in the SHL, Leksand will be looking for vengance. Will they get it, and topple one of the most prolific winners in CHL history, or will Frölunda forge ahead and into their sixth Semi-Finals appearance?
