- Lukko Rauma lost in overtime after holding the lead for 55 minutes in their game against Lausanne HC.
- Meanwhile, Adler Mannheim showed complete dominance against their Game Day 1 opponents, the Cardiff Devils, beating the EIHL club 5-0.
- Mannheim’s Dennis Endras posted a shutout in their win against Cardiff, while Samuel Jukuri of Lukko made 27 saves on 30 shots.
In what could’ve been, and should’ve, been an opening night worth celebrating, Lukko Rauma were left wondering what went wrong as they fell to Lausanne HC in overtime with a final score of 3-2. Their early efforts positioned them for success, but a late third period collapse (and incredible comeback from Lausanne) meant that they would be skating away with one point instead of two.
Some bright spots were apparent in the early going, and this is what Lukko can focus on, but there are areas to improve as they get set for their upcoming contest against German side, Adler Mannheim. Chief among these upstarts is the fact that their netminder, Samuel Jukuri, played well despite the loss. But a challenge is in store as Mannheim made easy work of their Game Day 1 opponents, the Cardiff Devils.
For the first time ever, the Devils were defeated by a team on U.K. soil as Mannheim trounced them by a score of 5-0. A strong showing from the start by the German side culminated in some of the most lopsided shot totals in CHL history.
Mannheim managed an unbelievable 47 shots on goal to the Devils’ 9, with backstop Dennis Endras stonewalling every Devils' shot that came his way. Five different players scored as the German club sailed to a convincing victory. With this performance in tow, Adler Mannheim are primed to continue their high-performance play against the Finnish champs as they get set for game action. Puck drops at 18:00 CEST.
