- Rögle can secure top spot in Group D with a win
- SønderjyskE looking for first points of the competition
- Last week, Rögle won a close 3-2 game
Heading into the last Group D game between Rögle Ängelholm and SønderjyskE Vojens, there’s not much on the line at first glance. Rögle have already qualified for a place in the Round of 16 and SønderjyskE know for sure that they will not be advancing. But these proud teams do still have something to play for. Rögle would like to finish on top of the group, which is not guaranteed right now. If they lose this contest, they will be overtaken by the winner of the hugely important EV Zug – Red Bull Munich game, which will start later in the evening. As for SønderjyskE, they know that even a win will not get them out of fourth place, but they would at least like to remove that zero from the point column, and what better way for a Danish club to do that than against a rival from southern Sweden? Also, Danish rivals Rungsted Seier Capital have already won twice in Group G, so there may be some envious feelings there.
Last week’s meeting in Vojens between these two teams was close. Thanks to a sterling 34-save performance by Nicolaj Henriksen in goal, the Danes hung around and lost by a narrow 3-2 score. Anton Bengtsson scored two of Rögle‘s goals that night.
Overall, Ludvig Larsson is Rögle‘s top scorer in the CHL with seven points, while Michael Szmatula is SønderjyskE‘s with three.
Since last week’s game Rögle have won two straight SHL games, most recently 2-1 at home to the Malmö Redhawks on Saturday. They sit fifth in the 14-team league and have at least one game in hand against every team above them. SønderjyskE, meanwhile, have won three in a row domestically, most recently 5-3 over the Herning Blue Fox on Sunday. They’re fourth in the nine-team Metal Ligaen and also have a game in hand on every team above them.
