- Donbass and Rouen both secured a point in their first match
- Both teams looking for a bounce back game after a disappointing loss
- Donbass need to improve on special teams
HC Donbass Donetsk will take on Rouen Dragons as part of Game Day 4 action.
Both sides fell in their season openers, but managed to secure a point as Rouen lost in OT while Donbass was bested in the shootout.
In their first Champions Hockey League match, Donbass drew first blood as they looked poised and did an excellent job testing Rungsted Seier Capital netminder Ville Kolppanen. Their up-tempo play kept the visitors on their toes and, if not for a couple of squandered opportunities, could’ve resulted in a victory. Unfortunately, the Ukrainians allowed Rungsted to hang around a little too long and it was only a matter of time before the Danish side would find their game. Tied at 2-2 after 60, the clubs would advance all the way to the shootout where it would be Rungsted’s Marcus Olsson who put the dagger in Donbass’ heart to deny their first victory.
Rouen played a much tighter contest against KAC Klagenfurt. The only competing French side did well against Klagenfurt despite giving up the first goal. Rouen would find the equaliser later in the first and that would be the only scoring for the rest of regulation. With OT underway it was almost like the puck was teleported from center ice to the back of Rouen’s net as it took the home side just one minute to find twine and take two points away from an otherwise even matched affair.
As neither side was able to secure a victory in their first contest, it will be interesting to see how newcomers Donbass will respond in their second CHL appearance. As for Rouen, their first match should be a good indicator that their competetive level is going to test any team that comes their way.
