- Sparta won five consecutive matches to reach the Playoffs
- Skellefteå look to offence to sustain their success
- Sparta enter Tuesday among top teams with fewest goals allowed
Despite their storied histories in the Champions Hockey League, Sparta Prague and Skellefteå AIK will be facing off against each other for the first time in the Round of 16 when the Swedes play host to the Czechs at Skellefteå Kraft Arena. Sparta qualified by topping their group while Skellefteå’s advancement was a little more precarious. Regardless, both sides are still vying for a place in the Final and a chance to hoist the European Trophy.
Sparta amassed a 5-1 record through the first six contests led by veteran captain Michal Řepík and defenceman Michal Moravčík who each totaled five points in six contests. Looking back, their run to the Playoffs couldn’t have gone much better. After dropping their first affair, the Czech side stormed back and secured five consecutive wins, their last of which was a 3:1 decision against Pinguins Bremerhaven. Skellefteå, however, needed a bit of luck to keep their chances alive. Despite dropping their final game of the Group Stage against Tappara Tampere, the Swedish side managed to secure their place thanks to their success against German side Eisbären Berlin.
Skellefteå enter Tuesday’s match-up with more goals for (22) and a higher powerplay percentage (16.67%), but their PK (69.23%) will need some adjustment. Top players including, Joakim Lindström (4G,4A) and Adam Mascherin (2G,5A), will also need to continue their production against a stingy Czech defence that hasn’t allowed more than two goals in a game this campaign. Sparta, meanwhile, sport a measly 5.26% on the powerplay, only converting on one of 19 opportunities, and will need to address this going forward. Despite their defensive stability, their offensive shortcomings – 17 total goals, tied for 15th in the League – will also need to improve and that starts with more production from players like former NHLer Vladimír Sobotka (1G,1A) and former EV Zug player, Erik Thorell (0G,0A).
