- Frölunda's 10-1 first leg victory puts Mannheim in a very difficult position
- Mannheim struggled to find good scoring opportunities last game
- Frölunda's Ryan Lasch averaging two points per game
It was the best possible outcome for visitors Frölunda Gothenburg during the first leg of the Round 16. A dominant 10-1 victory over home side Adler Mannheim puts the Swedes in a very comfortable position, while the Germans are in a predicament. They would need to win the Return Game by a huge margin to have any chance of getting through to the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals.
Despite opening up the scoring at just over the six minute mark, Mannheim were overtaken, with the Swedes netting two before the end of the period, and it didn't stop there. Three more goals were added in the second, and five more before the sound of the final horn.
Frölunda's statistics across the board were equally dominant. They outshot their hosts by more than double, their conversion off the man-advantage was an incredible 80%, and their penalty kill a flawless 100%.
In comparison the German's were unsuccessful on all ten minutes of powerplay action, they were consistently bested by their rivals on face-offs, just 24 won, compared to Frölunda's 37, and on shot blocks, the Swedes blocked nearly three times as many as Mannheim.
So what can the German visitors expect on the upcoming road trip? Mannheim will have their hands full trying to contain the likes of forwards Ryan Lasch and Patrik Carlsson who are currently averaging over a point per game. To have any chances of going through, it will be critical for the side to stay out of the box and not give Frölunda any latitude to ramp up their deadly powerplay.
Catch all the action when Frölunda host visiting side Mannheim at the Frölundaborgs Isstadion on 23 November at 18:05 CET.
