- Växjö need a regulation win to keep Playoff hopes alive
- Turku could spoil their opponents' Playoff chances with a win
- Växjö will have home-ice advantage going into the contest
The Växjö Lakers will meet Finnish side TPS Turku to round out their 2021/22 CHL Group Stage.
With two teams still in front of them, Växjö will need some help if they hope to move on to the Playoffs. As it stands, the Swedish side must secure a win in regulation to help their cause, and since they have the better head-to-head against both Sparta Prague and Pinguins Bremerhaven – both ahead of them in the standings – their chances of gaining ground are not impossible.
In their last match-up, Växjö were taken down by Turku in a 3-1 decision. Though they managed to score one on the man-advantage, the Swedes had plenty of other opportunities but failed to convert. In a surprise effort, it was Turku who, despite being outshot and outplayed for most of the contest, were leading heading into the third and they would maintain that lead until the final buzzer. Now it’s up to Olle Lycksell and co. to leave the home fans with some hope going into Tuesday's rematch.
Unfortunately for the visitors, it’s going to be their last match of the 2021/22 CHL campaign, and while they won’t be moving on, they can still spoil their opponents’ chances with another win in Tuesday’s tilt.
After a quiet first four games, it was all Aarne Intonen who potted his first two tucks en route to helping Turku earn their first win of the campaign. By the metrics, it appeared as if the Finns would be the ones to go down early, but they somehow were able to keep the Swedish side off the scoreboard despite supplying them with numerous opportunities.
As they prepare to face a Växjö club on the cusp of elimination, Turku will need to play a more cautious game and limit their trips to the box to give themselves a fighting chance.
