- A win and favourable results puts Lugano into the Round of 16
- Eisbären looking to complete Swiss double
- Lugano need to win to stay in Playoff contention
HC Lugano host Eisbären Berlin of Germany knowing that a regulation win would go a long way to placing them in the Round of 16.
The Swiss side could also make it through with an overtime or shootout win, but would then be relying on Tappara Tampere to beat Skellefteå AIK in order to go through.
Lugano missed the chance to keep total control of their own fate when they suffered a 6-3 defeat in the German capital on Game Day 5 but have the chance to get the job done back at home where they have a 1 & 1 record.
The Eisbären are already eliminated and are playing for both their own and their country’s pride – any additional points they can pick up will count towards the overall League Ranking.
It’s been an indifferent start for Chris McSorley’s team in the National League. A weekend derby win over Ambrì-Piotta ended a two-game losing streak but meant much more in terms of the teams’ rivalry. Lugano find themselves eighth after 12 games with 18 points.
The Eisbären have had a solid start in the DEL and find themselves fourth with 11 games played. Serge Aubin’s side are on a three-game winning streak domestically stretching back to 3 October.
