ZSC Lions Zurich were shutout and amassed 102 penalty minutes in their first game against IFK Helsinki. What started as a relatively fast game deteriorated quickly as scuffles broke out throughout the match.
ZSC netminder Ludovic Waeber was an outstanding performer for the Swiss side, and wowed the fans a spectacular number of saves. There were moments of brilliance by ZSC, and multiple opportunities, but they were unable to capitalise and get on the scoreboard.
Defending Champions Frölunda Gothenburg had a convincing first win against Czech side BK Mladá Boleslav. The Swedes, who played their first game on the road, notched three goals in the first period, and were successful maintaining their lead until the end. The Czechs managed to get just one goal past Frölunda netminder Niklas Rubin.
