- Färjestad's balanced attack has been outstanding
- Villach searching for their first win
- The Swedish side lead the league in goals for and goals against
Färjestad Karlstad currently occupy first place in their group and their stellar play of late betrays no sign of a decline as their recent 6-1 shellacking over the Straubing Tigers has cemented them as the team to beat. Through two contests, the Swedes are sitting with the highest goals per game average at 6.50, as well as the lowest goals against per game average at 0.50 – they’ve allowed just 1 goal.
In their last meeting with the Austrians, Färjestad were relentless, attempting 84 shots with 60 hitting the mark and seven hitting the back of the net. The Swedish side’s balanced attack – Linus Johansson (3G, 1A) leading the forwards and Axel Bergqvist (3A) manning the backend – has been a nightmare for squads to contain.
As they head to Austria, maintaining their tempo and pace from their homestands will be their priority. The Austrians know what to expect, so consistency will be the key.
On the opposing bench, it's been all quiet on the Austrian front as Villach SV find themselves in a dire position. Having dropped both affairs – most recently a 4-2 bid against Polish side Comarch Cracovia – the Austrians are the only squad in Group F with no points this season.
Going into their rematch with Färjestad, Villach will need to stay disciplined. The Swedish side has been a force on the powerplay and Villach’s penalty kill needs some addressing, having giving up two in their match with the Swedes. Contributions from up and down the line-up will be essential. While Robert Sabolič has been admirable, a more all-around effort is needed to have a chance against the Swedish side.
Something that could play a factor for the Austrians will be having their home fans behind them. This added boost of energy could be the missing ingredient that turns the momentum in their favour.
