- Ilves won their first meeting in a dramatic OT
- Salzburg are coming off their own SO win
- Ilves' top players need to find their scoring touch
Red Bull Salzburg earned their second victory and two points in the standing in their 3-2 OT win over the Stavanger Oilers. The Austrians remain one point behind Fribourg-Gottéron who shutout Ilves Tampere in their Game Day 3 contest. Now the Austrians will travel to Finland where they’ll meet Ilves for a redo.
In their first affair, it was Salzburg who forced the extra session after Benjamin Nissner scored the equaliser with under a minute to go in the third. Heading into OT, it seemed the Austrian side had their energy back as they controlled the play from the drop of the puck. But four minutes and forty four seconds in it would be Ilves’ Joona Ikonen to the rescue as the winger scored his first of the season to give the Finns their first victory.
Fresh off a shootout win, Salzburg will need to make sure they have their feet moving from the get-go. Ilves is a young team and have the speed and skill to generate chances off the rush, so keeping pace with them will be paramount.
The Finns lost their first CHL home game but will look to rebound versus a club they’ve already had success against. While Ilves were a little lost in their Game Day 1 match-up, their presence and perseverance in Game Day 2 was noticeable as they were able to match and even exceed Salzburg stride for stride. The Finnish side attempted 27 shots to Salzburg's 19 and limited the hosts' high danger opportunities to just one. As they prepare to welcome the Austrians, they’ll need to work on finding ways to give their shooters more space.
Captain Eemeli Suomi has been rather quiet with one assist through three games, and the success of the team rides through him. If he can find his rhythm and help his team produce, the Finnish side have a decent shot at securing their second victory.
