- The Belfast Giants make their second CHL appearance
- During their 2019/20 CHL debut Belfast faltered, taking just one win from six games.
- Oceláři Třinec haven't been able to advance past the Group Stage in their last three campaigns
As the Belfast Giants head into their second Champions Hockey League season, there's much to look forward to including a host of new teams to test their mettle, and their first challenge is a formidable opponent.
With eight CHL qualifications to their name, and a national championship in tow, Oceláři Třinec roll into the competition with well-earned confidence. Their finals win against Sparta Prague in the Extraliga gave the Czechs back-to-back victories, while their roster has retained key talent, including the likes of former NHL players defender Martin Marinčin and netminder Marek Mazanec, both of whom return for a second season.
Much like their rivals, the Giants have been strong performers in their respective domestic league. Head Coach Adam Keefe is and has been committed to building a strong and competitive team for many seasons now. Leading the charge for the Northern Irish side, and wearing the "C" is David Goodwin, who suits up for his third season with the team. Goodwin is joined by Canadian winger, and "A" Mark Cooper. The offensive duo were among the top four in their team when it came to lighting up the lamp last season, and will be looked upon for their leadership and scoring prowess.
With both sides having struggled to pick up points to advance past the Group Stage games, the pressure is on to turn their luck around. Will the more the more experienced side dominate their visitors, or will the Giants boulder their way through?
