- Wolfsburg won previous match 4-1
- Turku outshot the Germans 36-14
- Wolfsburg have already qualified for the Playoffs
TPS Turku will travel to Germany to faceoff against Grizzlys Wolfsburg as the two sides meet for their final Group Stage game. Last week the Germans came away with their third win of the season in a 4-1 victory in Finland.
For Wolfsburg, their win last week has qualified them for a date with the Round of 16. In five contests, the Germans have seen their share of successes and failures, but have remained consistent throughout, with their most dominating effort being a 7-2 win against Olimpija Ljubljana. In their last match-up with Turku, Wolfsburg were the recipients of a few good bounces and, although being outshot 36-14, it was the Germans who would go on to score in all three periods to claim the game.
The Finnish side had their legs going early, outshooting and out-chancing the opposition in the opening minutes to the tune of a 12-4 shot advantage after the first period. Looking ahead, engineering a better start would go far in helping the Germans realize their fourth victory of the season.
Last week, the hosts enjoyed more powerplay chances (5), had more shots on goal, and had stronger possession numbers, winning 42 faceoffs to Wolfsburg's 24, but their inability to execute in the offensive zone cost them the match and a chance at qualifying for the Playoffs. Teemu Kivihalme got Turku on the board in the third, but by then, the Germans were already sitting with a comfortable two-goal cushion before finding their fourth with an empty-netter.
With one more game left to play, improving upon their 24th-ranked offence that sees them producing 1.80 goals per game should be their main focus. Unfortunately for the Finns, no one skater has emerged as their go-to scorer as Mikael Pyyhtiä leads the team with two goals and one assist through five fixtures. Consequently, contributions from up and down the roster should also be a priority for a Finnish side that reached the final in Liiga last season.
