- Zug won first meeting 5-2 in Wolfsburg
- Zug D-man Hansson leads CHL with 6 points
- Both teams scored 9 goals in first two games
EV Zug are one of those teams that have put themselves in an enviable position in the Champions Hockey League Group Stage by taking the maximum six points from their first two games on the road. That puts them close to securing a spot in the next round while playing three of their remaining four games at home.
The situation isn’t so bad for Grizzlys Wolfsburg either, however. They started with a 5-2 home-ice loss to Zug last Thursday, but rebounded in a big way with a 7-2 win over Olimpija Ljubljana on Saturday. As a result, the Grizzlys sit tied for second in Group B with TPS Turku – three points behind Zug and three up on Ljubljana.
In the first meeting between these teams, Zug got goals from five different players but defenceman Niklas Hansson had four assists. With a goal and an assist against Turku, Hansson leads the entire CHL with five assists and six points, while forward Lino Martschini has four points. For Wolfsburg, forward Luis Schinko is tied for the CHL lead with three goals and leads his team with four points, while linemate Tyler Morley has three assists.
Both of these teams can score, each putting up nine goals through their first two games, placing them both in the CHL’s top six in offence so far.
While Zug is in a solid position and any points they get from now on bring them closer to advancing, this could be a pivotal game for Wolfsburg. Any points they can take from Zug could go a long way to deciding whether they advance or not. Ultimately for them, it could come down to the home-and-away against Turku in October.
