- Both clubs on only 1 win so far this season
- Belfast haven't let in a goal on home ice so far this season
- Salzburg a veteran of seven past CHL seasons and one of the strongest clubs in the ICE
ICE champions Red Bull Salzburg will travel to far away Northern Ireland to face the Belfast Giants in The SSE Arena, Belfast for a Game Day 5 duel that could have huge implications in these two teams' Champions Hockey League seasons.
Salzburg and Belfast are right behind each other in the Regular Season Standings and with both of these clubs on only a single win in four games so far this season, a +3, or +2, point haul could, theoretically, see one of these teams rise up into a solid Playoff qualification position, whereas a 0-point or a 1-point night would make it very hard for the other club to qualify heading into the final Game Day next week.
Both Salzburg and Belfast had a slow start to the new CHL season and failed to pick up points across Game Days 1-3, before finally breaking through on the final September Game Day.
For the Austrians, it was against the Stavanger Oilers, who they beat 5-2 on home ice, displaying some dominant play up front and an equally good performance in net from David Kickert.
For Belfast, it was against HC Bolzano who they thrashed 4-0 in a game where the Giants seemed to be flying in. The scoring was spread over three of Belfast's four lines, while netminder Tyler Beskorowany made 28 saves on the night to bring home the win for his team and secure his first shutout of the CHL season.
One of Salzburg's main struggles has been scoring, as, prior to beating Stavanger, they had only netted three goals in three games and the same is the case for the Giants who scored only two in three games before they beat Bolzano, despite playing a very strong game in Innsbruck.
It's a coin toss between these two, but if Belfast tap into the energy they drew last time around in The SSE Arena, they could be unstoppable, especially with their fantastic home fans behind them! A tough away game for Salzburg for sure...
