- Färjestad 4-3 up in series
- Skellefteå lacked in finishing in First Game
- Winner moves on to Semi-Finals
Following a thrilling seven-goal First Game, this Quarter-Finals battle between two Swedish teams heads into its second half as Färjestad Karlstad take their turn in playing hosts against a mighty Skellefteå AIK!
Färjestad headed into last week's game with a solid series of wins over their countrymen and that spilled over into the Champions Hockey League, though it was closer than expected in the end.
Färjestad were 4-1 up by the end of the second period and were set to win big as Skellefteå struggled to break through a near-perfect Maxime Lagacé but a third-period PP goal and an Axel Sandin-Pellika strike in the final six minutes got the home team within a goal in the match-up.
What else can you take away from their First Game? Both teams struggled on the PP with only 1/6 man advantages ending with a goal scored, while on the flip side both clubs enjoyed a solid night for their PK units.
Goalies turned out to be the decider, as Skellefteå's Linus Söderström ended the night with a sub-75% SV %, while Lagacé made a respectable 24 saves and only saw his numbers drop to below 90% after the two late goals.
However, we've been avoiding the elephant in the room, and that's the fact that it was Skellefteå, not Färjestad, who controlled this game. The hosts outshot their visitors 27-15, were more physical with five hits on the night and were better on face-offs.
If they can manage the same on Färjestad's ice, they might just be able to flip the one-goal deficit and find themselves in the CHL Semi-Finals!
