- Munich's defence has been among the best
- Košice need more contributions from up and down the line-up
- Special teams play could be the difference maker
Red Bull Munich scored twice in the final ten minutes of their match-up against Oceláři Třinec as the Germans registered their first win of the young campaign in a tight 2-0 contest. HC Košice had their efforts spoiled by a Swiss side that never let up as Genève-Servette would take down the Slovaks 3-2.
Munich played to their identity and gave a full 60-minute effort in their win over Třinec. Heading into their fixture with Košice, the Germans will need to bring that same style of play against a Slovak side that has shown it can compete. Sitting 13th in goals for per game, however, is something Munich will look to rectify and this starts with more contributions from top scorers Austin Ortega, Andreas Eder, and CHL veteran Trevor Parkes.
On the defensive side of things, Munich boast one of the best netminders in Mathias Niederberger whose 94% SVS and 1.44 GAA put him in the top ten in the position. Their defence has also been dominant as they've averaged 2.00 goals against per game, which ties them for fourth in the category.
Košice, to their credit, shouldn't be underestimated. Their recent loss to Genève is another example of how the Slovaks refuse to bow out easily and a big reason for that has been their special teams play, and specifically their penalty kill which is tied for first-place with 100% efficiency.
Where they need to focus their attention is when they have the puck. Through the first two games, only four forwards and two defenceman have found the scoresheet. Establishing an offensive presence against a club that excels in shutting down their opponents will be their biggest challenge, but if Košice can find ways to navigate Munich's defensive zone they have a chance to steal a game on the road and gain valuable points.
