- Genève in a must-win situation
- Fehérvár playing to end season on positive note
- First meeting in the CHL between the clubs
Following their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Skellefteå AIK, Hungarian side Fehérvár AV19 still have yet to tick the win column and are without points through the first five Game Days of the 2024/25 season. Reigning Champions Genève-Servette also suffered a disappointing loss, falling 3-2 to KAC Klagenfurt in OT.
Two consecutive wins in their two previous contests gave Genève the life they needed to possibly make a run for the Round of 16, but that run is now in jeopardy following their recent defeat at home. In that game, the Swiss took a two-goal lead against Klagenfurt, but were unable to maintain it as the Austrians forced OT with a Simeon Schwinger tally early in the third.
Fortunately for the Swiss, Fehérvár have struggled in several areas this season, namely in scoring goals. Through five contests, the Hungarians have only mananged six markers and are ranked 23rd in goals for per game with 1.20. Provided Genève are able to find the net against a Fehérvár defence that's currently allowing 4.40 goals against per game, the Swiss should be able to secure three more points and, with any luck, a place in the Playoffs.
While Fehérvár may have had low expectations entering the 2024/25 campaign, having no wins through the Regular Season has been disappointing for a team that was top shelf in their domestic league last season. Going up against one of the stronger competitors in the competition doesn't bode well for the Hungarians' chances of securing at least some points before they bow out, but the CHL has had its fair share of surprises.
Upsets have been done before and they can happen again. For Fehérvár to do this, though, they'll need to focus their efforts on their defence. Score early and then find a way to frustrate a Genève offence that's currently clicking at a pace of 3.20 goals for per game.
