- Fribourg are two points ahead of Straubing in the Regular Season Standings
- Straubing need goal production from their top men
- Marcus Sörensen leads players for points with a tally of 10
Ranked fifth in the Regular Season standings, Fribourg-Gottéron enter Game Day 6 of the Champions Hockey League in a solid position, with a 3-2 win-loss record, ten points and Round of 16 qualification already in the bag.
The Swiss contenders, who are participating in their sixth CHL season, clocked a monumental 9-3 win in their last game against reigning DEL champions Eisbären Berlin. The victory represents marked improvement from their previous performance which saw a depleted roster suffer defeat to Oceláři Třinec.
Fribourg have a host of impressive statistics, notably, they're one of the top scoring teams, averaging four goals per game. While there are multiple contributors, two Swedes are at the helm of Fribourg's offensive charge: 32-year-old Swedish forward Marcus Sörensen with 10 points (2G, 8A) and Lucas Wallmark, who has made a stunning start is in his first year with the Swiss team, potting 8 points (1G, 7A) in five games.
In contrast, the Straubing Tigers enter the game ranked 12th and currently sit on a 3-2 win-loss with eight points after going down 4-1 to Polish side Unia Oświęcim on their last road trip. That loss aside, the German's have the third-best powerplay in the league, converting 30.77% of their chances, for comparison, Fribourg have achieved a meagre 13.04%.
Where Straubing are lacking is in their ability to generate offence compared to their rivals. The Germans are averaging 2.40 goals per game. Blueliner Marcel Brandt is the top scorer for his side with four points (2G, 2A).
Statistically, Fribourg are slighly better on the peanlty-kill (85.71% compared to 83.33%). Between the pipes, the netminding performance shows more similarities than differences. Both sides have opted to distribute netminding responsibilities fairly evenly.
Netminder Bryan Rüegger has played the bulk of the minutes so far for Fribourg, and maintains a save average of 86.90% while stalwart Reto Berra is on 93.18%. Similarly, Florian Manuel Bugl sits on 88.89% after 182 minutes of playing time, while teammate Zane McIntyre who is in his first season with Straubing posts a 93.62% save average.
This game is going to be a close match-up. Straubing have the capacity to do some serious damage on the powerplay, provided they get the man-advantage time, but first they'll have to find a way to stave off the scoring prowess of the Swiss.
