- Storhamar have a 1-1 record so far
- Genève have been hit with two back-to-back losses
- Genève have killed all nine penalties they faced
Reigning Champions Hockey League Champions Genève-Servette enter Game Day 3 with an underwhelming 1 point on the leaderboard after back-to-back losses to the Lahti Pelicans and Pinguins Bremerhaven. The Swiss team haven’t started the season as they had hoped. They didn’t succeed in their opening game against Bremerhaven, despite controlling most of the play, and their second game against the Pelicans didn’t fare much better, as the Finns edged them out in a shootout.
If Genève hope to turn things around, they'll need to improve their powerplays. Despite seven opportunities across their first two games, they failed to capitalise on any of them. However, they should take pride in their penalty kill, which has been flawless, successfully defending nine penalties against.
To have any chance of qualifying for the Round of 16, Genève will need to regroup and start collecting points, with their next opportunity coming against Storhamar Hamar.
The Norwegians from Hamar haven’t had a much better start to the season. With a loss to ZSC Lions Zurich and a shootout win against Fribourg-Gottéron, they sit with just 2 points and are also outside the Top 16. To advance, Storhamar will need to kick-start their offence, as they have only managed to score two goals so far this season. That has got to change! On the other hand, like Genève, they too have been rather impressive on the penalty kill, also successfully defending nine penalties coming their way.
It's clear that both teams are in desperate need of a win to boost their chances of advancing, but only time will tell if it will be Storhamar or Genève who rise to the occasion.
