- Malmö host SC Bern to start their round of 16 clash
- The Redhawks topped Group B to qualify for the knockout rounds
- SC Bern currently sit second in domestic competition ahead of this clash
The Malmö Redhawks will play host to Swiss side SC Bern when they two sides meet for the first leg of their round of sixteen clash in this years Champions Hockey League.
The Redhawks topped Group B in their second season in the CHL, claiming the top spot over Red Bull Munich who also finished on 12 points, while Bern saw their chances of finishing top of Group G taken away at the last second as a win for Red Bull Salzburg in their last group game was enough to see Bern finish second.
Both sides are up their among the best in their domestic campaigns right now, Malmö currently sit fourth in the SHL, while SC Bern occupy the second position in the NLA, with both enjoying a similar run of form.
Bern make the trip to Sweden on the back of a close overtime win over Biel on Saturday night, and have wins in three of their last five outings, while Malmö also have three wins in their last five, but come into their round of 16 clash after back to back losses to Frölunda and Färjestad.
Fredrik Händemark had a great showing in group action for the Redhawks and has continued that in the SHL. After posting 7 points in 6 group games, he’s currently joint as the teams leading scorer domestically with three goals and eight assists, tied with Konstantin Komarek.
For SC Bern, Jan Mursak has continued his impressive start to the year with 13 points in 16 games, while Andrew Ebbett is over a point per game with 17 points on the year, to add to his three points in Group action.
Perhaps one of the deciding factors of this match will come between the pipe. For years one of the best goalies in Switzerland has been Leonardo Genoni who will go head to head with Cristopher Nihlstorp with both goalies in the top five for save percentage in the competition so far, and with both teams having such potent attacks, Genoni and Nihlstorp will be heavily relied upon in this clash.
