When these two teams last met, the dynamic of the fixture had the potential to put Malmö’s qualification hopes in jeopardy. Now that the Swedish side have joined Munich in the knockout stage, thanks to TPS Turku’s win over Yunost Minsk, this game has transitioned into a question of pride rather than qualification.
The Belarusian side were chasing the reverse fixture throughout after conceding a goal eight minutes into the game. They then found themselves two down after a delightful solo goal by Ilari Filppula, brother of New York Islanders' Centerman Valtteri Filppula. Zach Budish scored his third goal of the tournament to dampen any comeback from the visitors, who were eliminated because of the outcome.
Had the result gone the other way then Minsk would have had everything to play for, especially after Munich beat Malmö 3-2. For that reason, they will undoubtedly be looking to exact revenge on Turku with a loss that would send them to the bottom of the Group. Another win for Turku would see them finish their tournament on a high note; the peak of which came with a victory over the current Group leaders.
