Red Bull Munich are closer to the Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals than any German team has ever been before, thanks to a 49-save performance from Danny Aus den Birken and a late goal by Maximilian Kastner. The goal gave them a 3-2 victory in Bern and a one-goal lead heading into their home game next week.
In front of a home crowd of 13,763, the Swiss champs came out shooting, but it took them until the 14th minute for Andrew Ebbett to open the scoring on the power play when he buried a loose puck with Aus den Birken down and out. Late in the period, Brooks Macek had a great chance to tie it for Munich but Leonardo Genoni dove to his left to take away his backhander.
There was a flurry of action early in the second period, with three goals in the first seven minutes. First Steven Pinizzotto picked up the puck behind the Bern net and fed Top Scorer Keith Aucoin in front, who beat Genoni from point-blank. Andreas Eder gave Munich the lead after losing a faceoff in the Bern zone but then beating everybody to the puck and firing a shot under the crossbar. But Justin Krueger tied it back up at two, skating in alone on Aus den Birken and beating him with a backhand deke.
Late in the second period, Mason Raymond had a great chance to give Bern the lead when he skated in alone but Aus den Birken stood his ground and gave the speedy centre nothing to shoot at. The shots kept coming from Bern in the third period, anxious to win their home half of the series, but the German netminder refused to yield. In the late going, Aucoin had another great chance for Munich but was denied by Genoni, but with 1:39 to play, Frank Mauer won a battle for the puck in the corner and found Kastner in front, who made no mistake in beating Genoni top corner.
