SC Bern built up a two-goal lead in the home leg of their Quarterfinal, let the Växjö Lakers come back to tie it, then got a late goal to win it, meaning they’ll take a one-goal lead to Sweden next week.
Cheered on by another large home crowd of 13,629, Bern came out on offence and forced Växjö into an early penalty when Nils Carnbäck was called for holding at 1:24. On the power play, Gaëtan Haas converted the rebound after Eric Blum's point shot. The goal stood, despite Viktor Fasth’s protests of goaltender interference. In the second half of the first period, Växjö pressed hard but Leonardo Genoni came up with some big saves, robbing Elias Pettersson twice.
Early in the second period, Bern thought they’d doubled their lead, but it was knocked in by Tristan Scherway’s high stick and didn’t count. However, they did make it 2-0 in the 28th minute with another power-play goal, this time by Simon Bodenmann, who finished off a nice passing play. The teams traded more chances in the middle period, but both Fasth and Genoni were sharp.
The Lakers came out flying in the third period and scored twice in under three minutes. First it was Linus Fröberg with Fasth on the bench for a delayed Bern penalty, then right after Robert Rosen hit the goalpost behind Genoni. But later on the same shift, Rosen made good, banging home a rebound to tie the score.
It seemed like the Lakers had all the momentum, and would have gladly taken the tie back home on even terms. However, with 4:25 left in the game, Ramon Untersander scored a huge goal for Bern, converting a pass before Fasth could slide across. The sound from the Bern fans might have been more a sigh of relief than ecstasy, but their team still has quite a task ahead next week.
