After a sound beating in Davos, Cardiff arrived in Liberec with a point to prove. The 'White Tigers' were also going in search of their first win, having lost to Vaxjo in OT.
Never in their wildest dreams could many Cardiff fans have anticipated the first period in Liberec. Coming in shorthanded, Joey Martin waited and picked his spot perfectly with the wrist-shot to put the Devils ahead with 4:50 played. As the period wound down it got better for the Welsh side - Drew Paris from the blue-line with just over two minutes to play.
The home fans in Liberec were undoubtedly shocked at the first period, but their team came out with point to prove in the middle session. After killing off a 4-minute penalty, the home side eventually got on the board - 29 minutes played, Lukáš Krenželok given too much space in the offensive zone to slot home from close range. Barely a minute later, Liberec were level. Sustained pressure eventually saw Martin Bakoš tie the game at 30:44, and at 33:38 Michal Bulíř fired home from the blue-line to complete the turnaround.
The final period saw Cardiff having more of the puck, but without creating any really good chances. On a powerplay late the Devils had the perfect chance to level things, but instead a turnover saw Daniel Špaček score a shorthanded breakaway to seal the game at 57:50. Milan Bartovič scored on the empty net as Cardiff went for broke to give Liberec a 5-2 win - but they were given an almighty scare by Cardiff for over half of the game.
