In a clash that was probably to decide top spot in Group H, the Frölunda Indians went into Zurich and picked up a 2-1 win over the ZSC Lions. Just like their first game, it was another close one, which was decided late. However, this one was more defensive and physical, with only three goals and the Indians holding a 27-23 edge in shots.
Knowing what was at stake, the two teams started going at each other right away, which the Zurich fans seemed to appreciate. In the 14th minute, Frölunda nearly scored a shorthanded goal but Niklas Schlegel made a big save. However, seconds after the penalty ended they did score, with Mats Rosseli-Olsen passing out of the corner to captain Joel Lundqvist in the slot, who let go a quick wrister that found some space just inside the post.
The Lions went to the attack right away in the second period and Pius Suter nearly got himself another goal when he picked off a pass near the blueline but fired just wide. Just seconds shy of the game’s midpoint, with Lundqvist in the box serving a four-minute boarding penalty, Fredrik Pettersson fired a long-range slapper to tie the score - it was also his 10th point of the tournament, temporarily moving ahead of Frölunda’s Ryan Lasch.
Early in the third period, Suter very nearly set up Pettersson for another goal, but the Cramo Top Scorer fanned on the shot at the side of the net. Then, with just under eight minutes to play, it was Frölunda striking on the power play, with Adam Almqvist perfectly teeing up a Victor Olofsson one-timer. Lasch recorded the second assist to pull back even in points with Pettersson.
The Lions were unable to answer again, so they remain with 7 points, just one ahead of KAC Klagenfurt, who they will now play twice to determine who will join Frölunda from the group in the Round of 16.
