The Nottingham Panthers earned their first-ever away win in the Champions Hockey League with a superb 4-2 win in the Czech Republic over Mountfield HK.
A very tight opening period saw the visitors, who lost 5-2 in Bern two nights ago, compete well with their Extraliga opponents and eventually took the lead on the power play - Josh Shalla with a beautiful wrist shot from the face-off spot at 12:05.
The Panthers would then go on to double their lead in the middle session - Zackary Phillips' inch-perfect pass finding Dan Spang, who fired into the half-open net to make it 2-0.
The final period started with most fans inside the building expecting Mountfield to come out all guns blazing. However, the majority of the 3,220 inside were shocked at 44:11 as Shalla scored another wrist shot from an almost identical position to make it 3-0 - much to the delight of the ecstatic 50-plus strong traveling support from Nottingham.
Mountfield did not simply give the game up, however, and were rewarded at 52:03 as Roman Kukumberg went top shelf after some nice passing from the hosts. It could have been two as the home side pressed forward, but a string of penalties on them presented the Panthers with an opportunity to kill the game that they didn't pass up. Phillips was again the provider, and this time Alexander Mokshantsev went low to make it 4-1 at 54:22. Mislav Rosandič brought Mountfield HK back to within two with 2:15 to play, but despite pulling the goalie they were unable to find any further goals and the Panthers held on for an historic win.
