Red Bull Salzburg recorded an important home win over HC05 Banská Bystrica to get themselves back in the race to qualify from Group A.
The opening period was played at a furious pace, with the home side coming close on numerous occasions. They did eventually open the scoring and more in a quick spell. First, Alexander Rauchenwald was given too much time and space to waltz through the Bystrica zone and fire top shelf to make it 1-0 at 18:25. Then, 38 seconds later, Brent Harris put the hosts up by a pair at the break - both goals were on the power play as the visitors ran into penalty trouble.
Rauchenwald scored his second and Salzburg's third at 27:14 to effectively kill the game off before the halfway point as the Red Bulls again had an extra body on the ice. Five minutes later, Alexander Cijan made it four to give his side a comfortable lead.
Bystrica tried to rally in the final period but their power play was ineffective, ending at 0-for-9. To add insult to injury, Ryan Duncan scored another power-play goal for the Red Bulls with just under eight minutes to play, as Bystrica - backed by several hundred traveling fans - were shut out 5-0.
