Following back-to-back 2-1 victories, Oceláři Třinec eliminated the Malmö Redhawks and advanced to the CHL Quarter-Finals for the first time.
With a one-goal aggregate lead and a full house of 4782 supporters behind them, Třinec doubled their aggregate lead quickly, as Tomáš Lindhart’s high blast from the point and deflected past Oscar Alsenfelt. Video replay was immediately called for with a high stick suspected, but in fact the shot had gone off Tomáš Marcinko’s helmet and in. It was a good goal, to the delight of the home fans.
After that, both Alsenfelt and Šimon Hrubec were fantastic. The teams went back and forth in the first period and then in the second the Redhawks went on the attack trying to get back into it, but despite three straight power plays they were unable to beat Hrubec. On a late power play of their own, the Steelers buzzed around the Malmö zone but were unable to beat Alsenfelt again.
As the time wound down, Malmö’s situation became more desperate, but Třinec were even more unrelenting in their tenacious defence and quick counter-attacks, which thrilled their fans more and more with each passing minute.
Things looked even worse for the visitors when they took a penalty for too many players on the ice with less than five minutes to play, but with 3:45 to go, Lars Bryggman eluded a check and snapped a shorthanded goal from the high slot past Hrubec to even the game score and bring them within one on aggregate. With just over a minute to go, Linhart missed a shot at the empty Malmö net, which gave the Redhawks a bit of hope, but David Cienciala made up for it with 18 seconds to go to secure the Třinec victory and start the celebration.
