In a key Group C match up, EV Zug made their home debut and put in a dominant performance but Vitali Trus was outstanding in the Neman goal, stopping 41 of 43 shots through 65 minutes of hockey before finally falling in a shootout. As a result, Zug have 5 points and Neman 3 in a tight group.
The score was 2-2 after regulation time and all four goals were scored in the second period. Artyom Levsha opened the scoring for Neman on a nice backhand feed from Pavel Boyarchuk but Garrett Roe evened it two and a half minutes later on a rebound. Vyacheslav Lisichkin restored Neman’s lead on a breakaway, going high stick side on Tobias Stephan, but Rafael Diaz tied it again on a 5-on-3 on a blistering shot from the point.
Zug had several chances to go in the third period with six power plays to Grodno’s one, including a 5-on-3 in the last minute, but couldn’t beat Trus. In overtime, David McIntyre did beat him but hit the goalpost. Finally, Zug outscored Grodno 2-1 in the shootout, with Roe getting credit for the game-winner.
